The RTX 2080 TI was compared against the Vega 64, the GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti. When you compare the frame rates in Assassin’s Creed Unity, the Vega 64 provides 30 frames per second. The 1080 is just a few more than this, and then you get a big jump with the 1080 Ti up to 45 FPS. Now, if you stack up the 2080 against the 1080 ti, you get about the same frames per second.
Now, the jump is if you buy the RTX 2080 Ti. Framerate in this game jumps up to 60 FPS. So, if you’re going to invest in the 2080, you may as well buy the 2080 Ti. You won’t see any difference in FPS between a 1080 Ti and a 2080.
In Witcher 3, the 2080 Ti outperforms other cards. With a Vega 64, you would get around 45 FPS on 4k res – about the same with a 1080 as well. With the 1080 Ti, you start to get into about 55 FPS – and a few more frames witha 2080 @ 4k, just approaching 60 FPS.
Now, put a 2080 Ti in there, and you start getting about 75 FPS. All of these values can be upped a little bit with a bit of tweaking.
So, it comes back to the same sentiment – that if you plan to invest in a 2080, might as well make it a 2080 Ti. There isn’t a big advantage when you compare the 1080 Ti to a 2080.
So – there’s a lot of hype around the new 2080 card, and certainly it is a replacement to the 1080. However, the hype is only somewhat warranted if applied to the Ti flavor.
